Celebrating Female Outdoor Leaders: A Thank You to My Inspiring Mentors

Every woman stepping into the world of outdoor leadership faces unique challenges and opportunities. As a female walk leader offering women-only outdoor experiences, I have found strength and guidance through the support of other female outdoor leaders. This International Women’s Day, I want to express my gratitude to two incredible women who have inspired me and helped shape my journey: Emily from Peak Outdoor Community and Chrissie from EightSevernOutdoors.

Emily’s Role as a Mountain Leader and Mentor

Emily, a mountain leader with Peak Outdoor Community, stands out as a beacon of inspiration for many women in the outdoor community. Her genuine support for women in business and leadership has made a significant difference in my path. We trained together last summer with Beyond the Edge, and her advice on how to get started in this field was invaluable.

What makes Emily exceptional is her willingness to share knowledge without hesitation. She understands the hurdles women face when entering outdoor leadership roles and offers practical guidance based on her own experiences.

How Emily’s Support Helped Me Grow

  • Shared Training Experience: Completing mountain leader training side by side created a strong bond and mutual encouragement.

  • Encouragement: Her belief in women’s potential in outdoor leadership helped me overcome self-doubt.

  • Authenticity: Her enthusiasm for the outdoors shines through, and she encourages other women in the outdoor industry.

Her approach shows that leadership is not just about skills but also about lifting others as you climb.

Chrissie’s Support in Building a Walk Leader Business

Chrissie, a hill and moorland leader based in Shropshire and a volunteer for Everybody Outdoors, has been another vital source of support. Starting a walk leader business comes with many questions and challenges, and Chrissie has been there to talk through these with me.

Her experience in the field and her willingness to listen have made a real difference. Whether it was discussing how to handle client enquiries or managing the practical side of running a business, Chrissie’s insights helped me feel less alone in the process.

What I Learned from Chrissie

  • Business Challenges: She helped me understand common obstacles and how to navigate them.

  • Authenticity: Chrissie empowers other women in business, she has shown me kindness and a willingness to share the outdoor space.

  • Community Spirit: Her volunteer work shows a commitment to making outdoor activities accessible to all.

  • Emotional Support: Sometimes, just having someone to talk to about the ups and downs is crucial.

Chrissie’s support reminds me that building a business is as much about connection as it is about skills.

The Power of Female Mentorship in Outdoor Leadership

The outdoor industry can feel isolating, especially for women starting out. Having connections like Emily and Chrissie creates a supportive environment where knowledge and encouragement flow freely. This kind of support:

  • Builds confidence through shared experiences

  • Provides practical advice tailored to women’s unique challenges

  • Creates a network of support that extends beyond training

  • Encourages women to pursue leadership roles with determination

By celebrating these women, I hope to highlight the importance of community and mentorship in outdoor leadership.

How You Can Support Female Outdoor Leaders

If you are a woman interested in outdoor leadership or already on your path, consider these steps:

  • Seek Mentors: Find experienced leaders who can guide you.

  • Join Communities: Participate in groups focused on women in the outdoors.

  • Share Your Story: Your experiences can inspire others.

  • Offer Support: Help other women starting out when you can.

Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive outdoor community.

Final Thoughts

Reflecting on my journey, I see clearly how Emily and Chrissie’s support has shaped my growth as a female outdoor leader. Their generosity, knowledge, and encouragement have been invaluable. This International Women’s Day, I celebrate not only their contributions but also the spirit of women supporting women in the outdoors.

We should all encourage other women in business and in the outdoor space, take a moment to reach out to a female leader in your community. Whether you are just starting or have years of experience, your support can make a difference.
