Spending time outdoors can transform your mood and lighten the weight we all carry. On a recent Saturday, I joined Wild Women in Shropshire & North Wales for a social meet-up at Carding Mill Valley. The day was filled with fresh air, laughter, and the kind of connection that only nature and shared passions can bring. We walked up to the waterfall, then took a refreshing dip in the reservoir. It was wonderful to catch up with familiar faces and meet new friends who share a love for the outdoors and van life.
If you’re looking for a safe, welcoming space to enjoy nature and connect with like-minded women, this group might be just what you need. Here’s a closer look at the experience, the location, and why joining forces with Wild Women can inspire your own outdoor adventures.
Discovering Carding Mill Valley and Its Hidden Gem
Carding Mill Valley is a stunning spot nestled in the Shropshire Hills, known for its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. The reservoir here has an interesting history—it was completed in 1902 to supply water for Church Stretton, which was growing as a spa town at the time. Today, this 12-million-gallon reservoir is no longer in use for water supply but has become a popular National Trust wild swimming spot.
The reservoir features a steep, stony, man-made "beach" area. The water is cold and deep, perfect for those who enjoy a refreshing dip surrounded by nature. Its secluded location makes it an ideal place to reset and recharge.
The Power of Outdoor Connection with Wild Women
Wild Women in Shropshire & North Wales started back in 2021 with a simple goal: to encourage women to get outside and enjoy the outdoors together. The group has grown into a supportive community where women can share adventures, learn from each other, and build lasting friendships.
At the meet-up, I reconnected with Poppy, Tanya, and Ania—the original members who helped start the group. Their passion for creating a safe, welcoming space for women shines through every event. I also met Bev, a fellow van life enthusiast and outdoor lover. It’s refreshing to meet others who share similar passions and understand the joy and freedom that comes from exploring nature.
Why the Outdoors Matters for Mental Wellbeing
For me, spending time outside is a reset. It helps me forget the heaviness life can bring and reminds me how even 10 minutes outdoors can improve my mood. We all carry something with us—stress, worries, or challenges—and the outdoors can make that load feel lighter.
Whether it’s a walk through the woods, a swim in cold water, or simply sitting quietly by a reservoir, nature offers a chance to breathe and be present. As spring arrives, it’s a perfect time to leave behind what no longer serves us and focus on enjoying the moment.
